Buddhism is the national religion of Myanmar and consequently about 85 % of the population are Buddhists. But like Thai Buddhism Myanmar Buddhism is strongly intertwined with spiritualism.
Myanmar was the first country in Southeast Asia where the words of the Buddha were spread. Buddhism has been taught since the first millennium of Christian reckoning by Indian merchants, who entered the Ayeyarwaddy delta for trade purposes.
But Buddhism became the dominant religion of Myanmar only after King Anawratha ascended the throne of the Burmese Kingdom in Bagan in 1044. King Anawratha was converted to Buddhism by a Mon missionary by the name of Shin Arahan.
As in Thailand, which was considerably later converted to Buddhism by Mon missionaries, in Myanmar a Buddhist temple is always the center of the village community. Like in Thailand, Myanmar Buddhist temples are the traditional places for education; and again like in Thailand, every male Burmese is expected to temporarily don the monk's robes at least once in his lifetime usually as adolescent.

The Hindu-Buddhist Cosmos
In a survey of the arts and crafts of Burma, one can do no better than begin at the gilded and whitewashed hpaya -  the pagodas and temples which are a prominent feature of any Burmese Landscape. There are tow main types of religious masonry building in Burma: the zeidei  (pagoda), a soaring, solid structure which takes its inspiration from the Indian tumulus-shaped stupa built to enshrine sacred relics of the Buddha, and a gu (temple), a square, hollow structure with a shrine for Buddha images, surrounded by one or more vaulted  passageways to accommodate ceremonial practices associated with Buddhist worship.
From the Kon-daw-gyi temple
Mount Meru and the surrounding seven mountains with the seven seas, together with the four continents: Ottayakuru,  a gold-colored square-shaped continent lies to the north. Pyopawideha, lying to the east, is white in color and crescent-shaped. The green-colored, circular-shaped Aparagawyan lies to the west, while Jampudipa, a triangular, brown-colored continent, the home of the human race, lies to the south. The diagram is based on a painting from the Kon-daw-gyi temple, Pagan. Thirteenth century.
Solid conical structure of the pagoda
The pagoda is a solid conical structure which has been increased to its present height by repeated casings of brick, the work of various kings of Burma. Facing each of the cardinal points are intricately decorated shrines which house colossal images of the four Buddhas of he present world-cycle. The platform on which the pagoda rests is surrounded by planetary pillars at each of the cardina and inter-cardinal directions, surmounted by effigies of the animals of the week. The pagoda rises from the base through three 19-metre-high square terraces decorated with projecting angles at each corner, to a five-tiered 7.8-metre-high octagonal terrace, followed by five concentric,  stylized, circular band, which on older pagoda forms was marked by lotus petal mouldings. On this rests the anda or bell (the bilbous portion) with medial and shoulder mouldings. Above the bell, the pagoda becomes more attenuated in outline with seven concentric rings diminishing in size with ascent, leading to flaring, waisted, upward-and-downward-turned lotus petal mouldings, above which swells the amalaka (banana bud) form. The seven-tiered gilded, crown-shaped iron hti (umbrella) rests on a brass capital. The umbrella shaft ends in a diamond orb and jeweled vane. Height: 99.36 metres; perimeter :432.28 meters.
